Made to order cakes from Kerry

Planning your destination wedding in Ireland (part two the wedding cake)

I hope you have found part one useful, if you have yet to read it you can do so before or after this second part.

As a wedding cake designer based in Killorglin County Kerry, I have plenty of experience creating beautiful and delicious cakes for couples who are planning their dream weddings in Ireland. A lot of my clients are from the USA, but I’m sure most of these tips should help you no matter where you are coming from, as long as you are looking to have a magical Irish wedding.

Here are some tips and advice for getting the best cake for your wedding in Ireland coming from abroad.

Consider the flavours and ingredients of Ireland

Ireland is famous for its delicious and unique cuisine, and there are plenty of fresh and flavorful Irish ingredients that you can incorporate into your wedding cake. For all of my wedding cakes, I mainly use local ingredients like Irish butter from Kerry, Baileys Irish Cream and pints of Guinness to create cakes that are uniquely Irish. You may also want to consider incorporating traditional Irish flavours like a local whiskey, Irish Stouts, or seasonal fruits such as blackberries into your cake to give it an authentic taste of Ireland.

Choose a cake design that complements your wedding theme and venue

Ireland is home to some of the most beautiful wedding venues in the world, from historic castles to rustic barns and everything in between. Once you have your location in the plan for your wedding you can use elements of the location in your design. I recommend choosing a cake design that complements the overall theme and style of your wedding. For example, if you’re having a vintage-themed wedding in a castle, you may want to opt for a more ornate cake design with delicate lacework and intricate piping. I am always happy to go over designs with you to make your cake unique to you and your wedding in Ireland.

Consider the weather and transport logistics

Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to consider the logistics of transporting your wedding cake to your venue. I always recommend that I hand deliver, assemble and dress your cake. This will ensure that everything is ready for your wedding. I know most of the venues and florists personally so I can liaise directly with them or your wedding coordinator to deliver ahead of your reception. Some couples also have a second cake just for on location photos, I can also assist in this.

If you do wish to organise your own transportation please let me know in advance and be aware of the temperature and humidity when transporting and storing your cake. These can affect the cake’s stability. Alway get in touch and I am happy to give advice.

Work closely with your wedding planner and other vendors

I always find that if I collaborate with the wedding planner and other vendors this can help ensure that your cakes are a seamless part of the wedding experience. For example, I like to coordinate with the florist to add fresh flowers to clients’ cakes, or work with the photographer so they can capture stunning photos of your cake and cutting. Additionally, communicating with the venue and catering team can help ensure that your cakes are served at the right time and in the correct manner. Communicating with your vendors and keeping them up-to-date on any changes or concerns can help ensure that your wedding day runs smoothly.

Don’t forget about the cake cutting ceremony

The cake cutting ceremony is a beloved tradition at weddings, and it’s important to make sure that your cake is showcased in the best possible light. I often recommend choosing a well-lit area for the cake cutting ceremony and coordinating with the photographer to capture the moment. It’s also important to make sure that the cake is cut and served in a timely manner to ensure that it’s fresh and delicious for your guests.

Planning a wedding in Ireland can be an unforgettable experience, and as a local wedding cake designer I can help ensure that your cake is beautiful, delicious, and uniquely Irish. Together we can create a wedding day that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
